Other Information

The Galway Taekwon-Do School was established in 1993, and was the first ITF recognised school ever to be established in the city.

Mr. O'Donnell has been practising Taekwon-Do since 1987. He is a student of Master Francis Barrett 7th Degree whom he originally trained under in the RITA's Clonmel school, before relocating to Galway in 1992 to attend university.

He co-founded the Galway School with Mr. Howard in 1993 after the pair met and discussed their ambitions to promote Taekwon-Do in the West region earlier that year.

Like his fellow instructor, Mr. O'Donnell is a former Irish team member. He was on the national team for the 1995 European Championships in Germany and was also a member of the Irish team which defeated the United States team in Dublin, 1998. He represented Ireland as International Umpire at the 2001 ITF World Championships in Rimini, Italy, and the 2005 European Championships in Dublin.  He was also a member of the Organising Committee for the 2005 Euros.  He was promoted to ITF 6th Dan in September 2005.

Mr. O'Donnell is a member of the RITA’s Disciplinary Committee and Finance Committee.  He is also one of two Coaches to the National Colour Belt Team (the other being Mr Robert Howard 6th Degree).

Master O'Donnell

New RITA Master

Galway Taekwon-Do instructor, Mark O’Donnell achieved his lifelong dream and was promoted to the rank of master (7th degree black belt) at a recent grading in Scotland. Master O’Donnell (36) is now the youngest Taekwon-Do master in Europe, after his recent promotion exam by Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha (9th degree).

The Galway instructor travelled to Glasgow to train on a two day black belt seminar and to grade under Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha.  Grandmaster Rhee, the man who introduced Taekwon-Do to Ireland, was impressed by O’Donnell’s technical skill and power breaking demonstration, where he smashed an array of timber and tiles with his hands and feet.

Master O’Donnell  started Taekwon-Do in 1987 in his home town of Clonmel under Mr Billy Keane. He later moved to Galway to study at UCG and set up (with Master Howard) the Galway Taekwon-Do School in 1993, and the Athlone Taekwon-Do School in 1998.  He is a former Irish team member and international gold medallist, who has also trained many students to medals at national level competition, as well as many students to win international & European medals.  Master O’Donnell is the original author of the RITA’s student handbook. He has been the driver of many of the RITA’s developments and initiatives over the years, and is expected to join the association’s Masters’ Council in April. He continues to train and teach his Taekwon-Do to men, women and children, at the Renmore Community Centre, Galway.  After 24 years of pursuing his goal this dedicated martial artist has reached the pinnacle of his career.

National Black Belt Seminar

Master Robert Howard, 7th Degree, recently celebrated 30 years in Taekwon-Do with two special commemorative seminars hosted by the Athlone Taekwon-Do School.  Since he began his Taekwon-Do training in 1979 at the age of nine, he has had a distinguished career in the Korean art.

A former Irish team member and World Championship gold medalist, Master Howard has turned his attention to instructing and promoting Taekwon-Do over the past 16 years.  In 1993 he co-founded the Galway Taekwon-Do School with fellow instructor Mark O’Donnell, while in 1994, he set up the Stillorgan Taekwon-Do School in Dublin.  Four years later, in 1998, he founded the Athlone Taekwon-Do School, which was the setting for the recent weekend of seminars.

Master Howard conducted a colour belt seminar on Saturday 12th September for the members of the Galway & Athlone Schools.  Mr O’Donnell prepared a slideshow documenting Master Howard’s 30 years in TKD and presented him with a commemorative photo album on behalf of the members of both schools.  After the seminar, Master Howard was brought to a local restaurant for a celebratory meal.

The following day, the RITA National Black Belt Seminar was held in Athlone, and attended by Black Belts ranging from 1st to 6th Degree from RITA Schools all over the country. A great weekend was had by all.

Congratulations to Master Howard on his first 30 years in Taekwon-Do from all of us in Galway!
